Basics of How a Computer Works Part Four

This means that if you have the right computer tech support professional that they can often actually retrieve data that you otherwise thought was lost. This can be used for forensic investigations too, so it’s an important lesson in not downloading anything you shouldn’t be in the first place. This is also why it’s a good idea to completely destroy a hard drive after you have finished using it.

If you have a hard drive that doesn’t work any more then, you can call computer technical support and they will be able to diagnose the problem and to install a new hard drive for you. This will simply mean taking out that component and then connecting it to the rest of the circuit on the mother board – there you have it, a brand new set of logic gates to write onto! At the same time computer technical support will also know when your hard drive is outmoded and when it is time that you got a new one, and they will be able to get the data off of your harddrive again in some cases by plugging it into external devices and running specific software.

As you know, memory can also be stored in a range of other ways. For instance it can be stored magnetically, and optically. Data on a CD for instance. There are hundreds of tiny grooves and bumps on the CD which is a highly reflective surface. Your computer then shines a laser onto the surface of the disk as it spins round. If you have ever seen into a CD player then you will notice the little diode that does this and often it will be green or red positioned just beneath the CD slot.

Now what this does is to shine light onto the CD, and that light then bounces back to the device. Of course this takes a certain amount of time, because light has a finite and set speed.
