Which Rice Cooker is the One For You?
Posted on August 4th, 2010 No commentsAre you wondering which rice cooker you should buy. A common choice these days is to get a Sanyo ECJ-PX50S rice cooker. First I shall discuss some of the benefits of eating rice and then go on to talk about why this Sanyo model may be a good choice for you.
Now a days there are a whole range of companies that sell specialist rice cooking machines across North America. These firms include companies such as Zojirushi, Tiger, Panasonic, Black & Decker, Aroma, Krups, Cusinart and many more. The list is not quite endless but it does go on quite a bit. One of the reasons that these appliances are gaining in popularity is that they make the whole rice cooking process simple and on top of that they are able to create great tasting rice with little effort on your part. Admittedly you still have to measure out the amount of rice that you want to cook; wash it; and then add the correct quantity of water. But that is about it. The rice cooker takes care of everything else for you.
The more you spend on a rice cooker, the better the machine will be able to make rice. For me, there is a “sweet price spot” for these kinds of appliances. What I mean by this is that the cheapest machines are cheap for a reason. They do cook rice but you have a harder time cleaning the machine afterwards. Conversely, the most expensive devices are good but are marketed at people with a lot of money on their hands.
The Sanyo ECJ-PX50S is in the sweet price spot. It costs about $150 which is reasonable for a high quality machine. It includes a variable pressure control function which helps to make great tasting rice with a nice texture.

Wu Long Tea and the Chinese Tea Culture
Posted on July 3rd, 2010 No commentsIf you are at all interested in tea, you may have heard references to the Chinese Tea Culture or The Way of Tea as it is often called. Chinese and Japanese tea masters have served up Wu long or Green tea for centuries, following specific rituals and following specific steps when brewing tea. Japanese tea ceremonies are very formal affairs which follow very stringent guidelines. Chinese tea ceremonies are more relaxed, with the focus being more on getting the best from the tea, rather than the ceremony itself.
Traditionally, especially amongst Chinese cultures, drinking tea is not just a social occasion but it is also supposed to aid enlightenment, clear the mind and enhance your overall thought patterns and cognitive processes. For this reason, masters of any trade frequently started their training sessions with a tea ceremony. This was not only for those studying martial arts, but for any student no matter what they were learning. This belief has been passed on through generations and is still firmly held to amongst Chinese cultures. In other words, there is much more significance attached to drinking green tea than the mere fact of quenching your thirst or enjoying another’s company.
If you sit down to discuss business, inevitably you will start your meeting by your host preparing and offering tea, frequently following the basic procedure that any tea master would follow, although not as stringently. You actually do feel quite different after imbibing many cups of tea, whether it is all in the mind or the tea does actually have a tangible effect on your thought processes is something you will have to decide!
Additionally, in China and Taiwan, the tea culture is very much intertwined with their arts. Perhaps this stemmed from the fact that the famous clay Yixing teapots were often handcrafted by master craftsmen, artists, who also designed other beautiful pottery. Whatever the reason, the two circles are very closely related.
If you ever have the chance to participate in a Chinese tea ceremony, or to learn how to properly prepare and serve tea the ‘Chinese way’ it is well worth doing. You will have a lot of fun, you will learn a lot about tea culture and it is guaranteed to be an enlightening and fascinating experience.

How to use a hand juicer
Posted on June 24th, 2010 No commentsDoes it surprise you that many people are opting to use hand powered juicer machines in the kitchen? It does sound a bit strange that, in a day and age where everything is electronic and ever advancing, that anyone would choose a manual device that requires muscle power! However, there are a few applications where a manual juicer is at an advantage – the best know probably being for making wheat grass juice.
Wheat grass, and the juice that can be made from it is now recognized as a real natural wonder – rich in anti oxidants, chlorophyll, and containing up to 90 different minerals, it si the ultimate health tonic.
Here is how you would make it at home, using a compact hand juicer machine.
First, set up your juicer – most will attach to a bench top with either a suction foot or a clamp. Place your glass or container for juice below the spout.
Then select your wheat grass shoots. These should of course be about 3-4 weeks old, or about 3-4 inches tall, and a nice bright green colour. Take a large hand full, and use a sharp knife or a pair of scissors to neatly cut it off at the base of the stalks. You don’t want any roots or soil residue, just the stalks.
If required, give the grass a rinse under clean water – don’t let it go or it will go everywhere! Pat the bunch dry on a paper towel or tea towel.
Now you are ready to juice! Tightly bunch the wheat grass in your fist, and push the bundle into the mouth of the juicer so that it reaches in where the juicing auger is. Now you need to start turning the crank handle.
As you start cranking, you should feel the grass being pulled in by the mechanism. There is meant to be a moderate amount of resistance – just keep turning. After a few turns you will start to see juice dripping out of the spout, and after another 30-60 seconds you will have a nice “shot” of juice ready to drink!
Using a hand juicer is fast, easy and a convenient way to make your own healthy juice at home. It also saves a lot of money over a period of months – buying wheat grass juice at cafes or health food shops is expensive.
Always remember to wash your juicer immediately after use to avoid pulp and juice sticking and causing corrosion or stains.

Probiotic Yogurts
Posted on February 4th, 2010 No commentsProbiotic yogurts are one of the fastest growing things to hit our store’s shelves and, well, our stomachs! A lot of people are still confused as to what probiotics are exactly and what they can do for the body. Probiotics are a kind of helpful bacteria that your body cannot produce on its own, meaning, the body is dependent to find this bacteria from outside food sources. The thing about probiotics is that they are essential and completely required in order to have a working digestive system that is problem free. One of the safest and greatest ways to give your body what it needs is probiotic yogurt.
Yogurt is perhaps the best way to hold probiotics and get them into your body because it is produced by bacterial fermentation of milk, meaning that yogurt in and of itself is a form of bacteria as the bacteria acts on milk to create the characteristics of the yogurt we all know and love. The way that probiotic yogurts are made is not much different then how the standard yogurts are made; during the fermentation process when the bacteria are added to the milk, various types of probiotic bacteria are also added into the mix to create a superior product.
Knowing the process by which this all happens is by far an excellent way to help people understand why this choice of getting probiotics into your body is such a superior one. The best probiotic yogurt is most likely going to come from the bigger brand and more esteemed companies that have been around for many years. It is always best to do some further research into why this is such a smart choice for you and your body. Including a doctor’s opinion is also another great idea as a licensed medical health practitioner can chime in with other valuable insights on what they believe to be the best choice or selection for your health.
