Introduction to Coral Snakes
Posted on September 7th, 2010 No commentsAs their name implies, coral snakes are water loving snakes. Some species of coral snakes are almost completely aquatic spending the majority of their lives in the water. Other species live in the debris of rain forests, hiding under the leaves or underground. Their geographic range within the United States is essentially the southern coast from Louisiana up to North Carolina, though coral snakes can be found throughout the world.
The significant difference between the species of coral snakes is the coloration of their banding. By sight they can be difficult to identify because several species of non-venomous snakes share similar coloration and patterns. The limericks associated with their identification are applicable only to coral snakes found in the New World, North and South America. Species of coral snakes in other parts of the world have markedly different coloration, and wearing snake proof boots is a good habit to get into anytime you’re going into an environment that might have many of them.
The coral snake is unlike a pit viper when it comes to biting. Whereas a viper is likely to bite and release, a coral snake is likely to bite and hang on. They have small fangs protruding from their upper jaw but they cannot penetrate thick leather clothing or sturdy leather gloves. If fangs do penetrate the skin, however, it must be treated as a serious medical emergency. There is very little pain associated with a coral snake bite when compared to a pit viper. The difference is found in their venom.
The lethal dose of venom from a coral snake is 3 to 5 milligrams, compared to the 10 to 15 milligram lethal dose of a Mojave rattlesnake, as compared to the 75-100 milligram dose of most other venomous snakes. Coral snake venom is a powerful neurotoxin that attacks the breathing muscles. Without medical treatment, a bite can become fatal within hours. Even with medical care, artificial or mechanical respiration as well as large doses of antivenin is required to stabilize a patient. Wearing thick gloves and snake boots are a good way to at least give yourself a better chance of not being harmed by a bite.
Unfortunately anti-venom for coral snake bites is becoming harder to come by, as the 15 to 25 confirmed coral snake bites on average per year make it non-profitable to produce. Coral snakes are skittish around humans and their first resort is to flee, and the majority of bites can be avoided by such small steps as wearing leather gloves while gardening. With any species of snake, coral snakes included, it is best simply to keep your distance and to mimic the coral snake’s natural inclination to beat a hasty retreat.

Path Light Systems for the Garden
Posted on August 19th, 2010 No commentsGardens can provide an exceptional visual experience at night. Without the addition of lights, however, gardens are just a black splotch in your yard. In some ways, an unlit garden can be spooky and unappealing. Garden lights can allow you to enjoy the beauty of your garden just like you do in the day. Backyard events come to life when you press the “on” switch. There are many kinds of garden lights, and this selection can make the selection process confusing. If it is unclear where to start, always set up some path lights first. Path lights require no electrical work and are quick to set up.
Path lights are an important part of any garden because they show people where to step. Each light has a solar panel which provides it with power. You will never have to send cords running across your yard. Cords can get in the way when you are cutting and trimming plants. Accidentally cutting into a cord can be dangerous. Path lights are safe to use outside and don’t need to be taken indoors when it rains. One huge benefit is that you will never have to pay for power costs. The lights get all the power they need from the sun. When used in large numbers, the savings can really add up.
Most path lights sit on a tall pole with their light beams pointing toward the ground. This creates a small circle of light which visitors can use to see by. Path lights should be lined up on either side of a path or walkway. This shows the limits of the path clearly. Path lights come in colors like blue, yellow and white. They create a surreal type of atmosphere and can really bring a garden to life. They come in convenient packs which can be bundles together to achieve full coverage.

How to Care for Down Sleeping Bags
Posted on March 10th, 2010 No commentsDown sleeping bags are great items to have for camping or hiking. They are top quality items that keep you warm and are light or carrying. To get the most of down sleeping bags however you do have to care for them properly. Here are some tips on how to take care of yours.
1. Always have a waterproof sheet or ground covering when you put the sleeping bag on the ground. This is to protect the outer shell from water and dirt. To protect the inside of the sleeping bag from skin flakes, oils, and other things, wear a t-shirt and shorts or other clothing to cover your body.
2. Keep the sleeping bag stored in its breathable storage sack. Do not leave it packed away for much longer than necessary. Tumble dry or let it air dry before actual storage.
3. Clean your down sleeping bag either by hand washing it in the bathtub or using a front loading washing machine. Do not use an agitator or a top loading washing machine.
4. Wash the sleeping bag in warm water and add soap before the sleeping bag. If using the bathtub, totally submerse it under the water and knead the water and soap through it. You may have to wash it twice but no more. When rinsing, make sure that all of the soap is removed. Rinse it at least twice but it is quite normal to have to rinse it upwards to five times.
5. If you have an extra spin cycle on the washing machine, use this to take out extra water. You can use a dryer to dry it but use a large one and set the temperature on low. You can also opt to use the setting that produces no heat to prevent any hot spots within the sleeping bag.

Rapala Pro Fishing
Posted on March 5th, 2010 No commentsAs far as video games goes, this one definitely can’t compete with the likes of Halo or Call of Duty, but if you are an outdoorsman who occasionally likes playing the odd video game, you might want to check out Rapala Pro Fishing. If you are cooped up in the house by bad weather, a nagging wife, or just unable to adventure outdoors in general, then having the odd video game devoted to your loved outdoor activities can be a real asset. Rapala Pro Fishing is one of the better fishing games out there and I suppose l can tell you a little bit about it, but you have to agree to invite me over for your next fish fry. Ok? Awesome.
There are two modes to choose from in this game: free fishing and tournament fishing. In the tournament mode, you compete against the clock to catch more and nicer fish than your competitors whereas free fishing is just a leisurely outing on the lake where you can fish without worrying about competition. In both modes, new equipment can be unlocked by completing various tasks, but these tasks aren’t clearly outlined anywhere so you just stumble upon them most of the time.
The mechanics of Rapala Pro Fishing is pretty much the same as other fishing video games. First, you gotta find a decent fishing spot in your boat, select the correct equipment for your location and target fish, then cast your line. There are two options for casting, the easy cast (what gamers would refer to as “ez-mode” and label anyone who chooses this option a “noob”) and then more realistic manual cast. Ez-mode is pretty much a point-and-shoot type of cast where you don’t have to worry about missing the hole you are casting into. Manual cast requires a little bit of technique, though. Basically, the rod is controlled by the analog stick and you have to press the cast button at the correct point of the cast. With practice, this is a much more efficient and fun way to cast your line. When you put your lure in the water, the camera switches to an underwater view and you can see the fish when it bites your hook. After the bite, the camera switches back to the third-person view of the boat and you start the
classic fishing struggle of balancing reeling in and line tension.Overall, this game is alright for casual play, but it is pretty easy to master if you frequently play video games. However, it is worth buying if you have an interest in the outdoors and at 30 bucks, it’s a pretty good deal.

Automatic Outdoor Food Smoker
Posted on January 22nd, 2010 No commentsThere’s nothing like the sweet and savory taste of smoked meats. Instead of paying an arm and a leg at an expensive restaurant, you can make delicious food like this right in your own backyard. People will dine in awe as they discover your expert cooking prowess. Smoked goods come in a variety of forms, including poultry, red meat, pork, fish and even vegetables. The combinations of zesty seasonings, juicy meat, and down-home smoky flavor make this a cooking method of choice for many Americans. The typical way in which you would smoke food is with a charcoal smoker. The downside to this is that you have to spend a lot of money on charcoal because it takes quite a bit of it for each cooking session.
After waiting for the coals to heat up, you have a limited window to cook the foods before it passes peak temperature. Make sure you have adequate outside lights so you can see. By using an automatic outdoor food smoker, you can eliminate the cost and time inconveniences and go fully electric. You may be wondering how the food gets its namesake smoky flavor this way. Special wood flavored bisquettes are placed over the heating element. The element is powerful and hot enough to cause the wood to smolder. Smoke is released for about eight hours before needing to be refueled. You can experience the great smoky taste of your choice by inserting different flavors like apple, oak, mesquite and cherry woods. The electric heating element combined with the smoky bricks delivers a comparable taste that is so much easier than a manual cooker.
Several racks inside allow you to place in a lot of food. For example, you could have a large chicken cooking to perfection on the middle rack, and some vegetable packets on the top shelf. Most smokers are big enough to serve up enough food for several families, which makes them great for parties and events. Take pride in the fact that you’re serving up restaurant quality food for family and friends to enjoy. After you’re done eating, store your smoker in a rubbermaid shed.

How To Get Garden Ponds
Posted on November 22nd, 2009 No commentsThere are two ways to put in a garden pond in your home. You can either build it from scratch, or you can get a pre-formed garden ponds. Of course, the quicker way is to buy the pre-formed garden pond. In a day or two, you have a great looking garden pond, exactly as how you envisioned it.
Of course, the do-it-yourself project is much more satisfying albeit a lot of work, so unless you have the time, then for quick results, go for the pre-formed garden pond.
After you have chosen you pre-formed garden pond, start on the foundation. Make sure you follow the instructions and specifications to the letter. The pre-fabricated form must fit perfectly into your hole. Once you have done this, you can then put in your fishes, rocks, and plants. That’s it! You’ve just upgraded your garden with a pond and in the process, made your home more valuable because of the improvements.

Make Hair Grow – Faster
Posted on November 15th, 2009 No commentsIt’s so frustrating trying to grow hair out or grow it long – like a watched pot never boils, “watched” hair never seems to grow at all.
But it is, at the snail’s pace of approximately half an inch a month, on average.
If you are at all serious about helping your hair follicles push out healthy, strong strands then you are going to have to take a multi-pronged approach.
Start taking a good hair growth supplement and eating well – lots of fresh, vibrant fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Get enough sleep – lack of it can grind hair growth to a near halt. Do scalp massage to increase circulation – more blood flow is a feast for your follicles and stimulates those lazy hair cells. Avoid shampooing more than twice a week. You can freshen hair with a thorough soak in just water or use conditioner only. Lastly, keep those split ends nipped in the bud by getting a “dusting” (a micro-trim) every six to eight weeks.

Some people will just want to have some nice flowers or some plants while others want something much more complicated. What you will want to do when deciding what sort of garden you want is to plan everything out first. Make a picture of what you want the final artwork to look like. Many times, because of a budget, you may not be able to get the garden you want all in one shot. You may have to add to it over months or years as you save up money. This can be a short term project or a long one. You can look online to find pictures to help you decide what look you want to create for your garden.

Thinking About A Used Ride on Lawn Mower?
Posted on October 22nd, 2009 No commentsMany homeowners have learned the hard way that mowing the lawn is a pain in their rear ends. For those of you that have huge lawns, you know it all too well. I used to spend countless hours pushing a push lawn mower around the yard for the entire weekend until I finally broke down and bought a used ride on lawn mower. That’s right, I got a used one. I just couldn’t afford the price tag of a new riding lawn mower, which cost $1,000 minimum. I didn’t fork over that much money, and you don’t have to either, fortunately. All you have to do is look in the classifieds and find someone who is selling their used lawn mower tractor. It is quite easy to get a great deal this way, as people who are moving need to get rid of bulky items like this quickly.
