If you need help with overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction then you could get some good insight by seeing a counselor or therapist. This is not so much a primary strategy for recovery but rather a secondary strategy. This means that getting counseling services can help you, but it is not a total solution. Rather, it is one small part of what you probably will need to do in order to recover.
In addition to getting counseling, you will probably want to go to a few meetings (such as 12 step meetings), as well as possibly get a sponsor and start working through the steps with that person. This is but one path you might choose but the point is that you have to do something. If you just sit on your couch and expect to stay clean and sober then you are in for a rough ride. It takes real action in order to recover.
