  • How Safe Are Baby Walkers

Posted on August 30th, 2009 admin No comments

Baby walkers are one of the most popular toys for small children. They are used all over the world in different models. There are wooden walkers, plastic walkers and baby walkers made of metals as steel or aluminium.

Parents often believe that the baby walkers make sure that their child is protected. Especially when using one of the models that look very secure. Another purpose of the baby walker is to make sure that the child learn to walk faster as it would without the walker.

This is all false. There exist several studies showing that baby walkers do not teach children to walk. In fact, children using baby walkers normally start walking later than those children not using them. On top of that comes the fact, that children using baby walkers are prone of getting hip problems and other problems as well.

For the security, several thousand children have to visit a hospital because of injuries caused from using baby walkers. The baby walker is one of the most dangerous toys there is today.

One of the reasons behind the injuries with baby walkers is that, with the baby walker the child is capable of reaching quite large distances in a very short time. This lets the child reach dangerous areas before the parents even notice. This is typical for injuries as burning.

Another problem is that many children fall down stairs or into swimming pools with the walkers. Head injuries are the most common type of injury caused by the baby walker.

Several countries has already taken cautions to solve this problem. Canada and Australia has legislated against the baby walker. In Canada it is not allowed to sell or import baby walkers.
