If you are the sort of person who enjoys doing home improvement projects and building things you may be interested in trying to build your own writing desk. The great thing about building your own furniture, especially if it is not that difficult to build, is that you can custom design it so that it fits into the area where it will be going and so that it has all the accessories you would like it to have.

Of course writing desks are actually fairly cheap to buy, depending on the type that you buy. You can either buy them online or you can buy them from regular office supply and office furniture stores. If you are not able to build an entire desk from scratch, you may still enjoy buying one from an office supply shop and putting it together yourself. They are usually fairly easy to assemble and providing you receive good instructions it should only take you an hour or so to assemble it.

Building your own writing desk from scratch may not necessarily be that much cheaper than buying one. The price of wood has gone up tremendously these days, thus if you are planning on using real wood to build your desk you may find that it turns out to be a fairly costly project. Set up your workspace in an area that will not be disturbed so that you could leave any half finished work out without any problem. Remember when calculating the cost of the materials that you will also need to finish the wood.

The advantage to making your own desk is that you will be able to customize it to your own specifications. You can also design it so that it fits exactly in the space allotted for it. Many people also get a lot of satisfaction out of a building their own desk.

If you do not feel quite ready to build your own writing desk from scratch, an alternative is to find an old second hand writing desk and refinish it. This is relatively simple, all that needs to be done is to sand down the desk and then refinished it with either varnish or some type of lacquer.
