Playing Better with a Violin Tuner

Every violin player wants to get the perfect notes. In fact, it is essential both for the ears (properly tuned violins play better sounds) and the violin itself (to ensure the strings don’t get broken).  Professional violin players can do this tuning easily – but with the proper violin tuner, a beginner can also do the job, especially if the violin tutor is not available.

A violin tuner is an electronic device by which you can compare and adjust the sound of your violin.  They differ in size and features; however the good ones are usually small, battery-operated devices that directly lift up the instrument’s vibration. Many manufacturers include a violin tuner in the package, but they can also be bought separately.  People who don’t have tuners also have the option of using an online violin tuner, calibrating the sound through computer speakers.

The violin tuner works in one of two ways. First is by producing a sound for each string and the player then listens to this sound and attempts to duplicate it on his instrument.  Older tuners, tuning forks, and an online violin tuner generally work using this principle. The second way is by electronically comparing the sound of the string to its own database (similar to actually “hearing” the sound). Then, it will display on a screen how far the string’s pitch is to the proper one.  By adjusting the pegs accordingly, the tuner will soon indicate that the perfect pitch has been achieved.

Using the violin tuner is easy enough.  But for the beginner, it may be best to start with tuning the A-string first, then repeating the process for the D, G, and E strings.  Care should be taken when moving the pegs, especially on the E-string, as it may break when too much force is applied.  It is also advisable to avoid exposing the violin to temperature extremes in order to preserve its tune.

To obtain a good tuner, there are online and local music stores to choose from.  Don’t hesitate to scout around for the right price, and choose the features that you really need. For instance, if you have a good ear, then cheaper violin tuners or even a set of tuning forks might serve your purpose.  There is also the option of asking help from professional piano movers, as the piano is also a good way to aid in tuning.
