Gastroesophageal disease, commonly known as acid reflux, is a condition that results from stomach contents backing up to the esophagus and sometimes as far as the mouth. These acidic contents often cause inflammation, pain and soreness in the throat and mouth and if it is persistent can even damage the esophagus and cause throat cancer. There is no treatment for acid reflux that one can use to get rid of the problem once and for all but there are many measures that can be put in place to prevent it from occurring. Acid reflux can affect anyone but it is very common among pregnant women and infants.
How would you know that you are suffering from acid reflux? Some of the common acid reflux symptoms in women include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, sore throat and coughing. Heartburn is the most common acid reflux symptom and often precedes all the other symptoms. This symptom occurs when the acidity levels in the stomach go up, causing sharp and severe pain in the neck, chest and abdomen. People who do not experience severe heartburn will most likely feel nausea and even end up vomiting. The vomiting part usually is as a result of pressure in the stomach caused by eating too much food or when a woman is pregnant and the fetus is applying pressure on the stomach.
Preventing acid reflux is actually very simple, it is all about eating right. A good acid reflux diet should aim at minimizing the amount of food eaten at a go and the acidity of the food after ingestion. Generally, it is advisable that one eats small amounts of food at a go more frequently than eat large chunks twice or thrice a day. Foods with high acidity values including some fruits and vegetables, fatty and greasy foods and coffee should also not be taken in large quantities especially during major meals.
