Does it surprise you that many people are opting to use hand powered juicer machines in the kitchen? It does sound a bit strange that, in a day and age where everything is electronic and ever advancing, that anyone would choose a manual device that requires muscle power! However, there are a few applications where a manual juicer is at an advantage – the best know probably being for making wheat grass juice.
Wheat grass, and the juice that can be made from it is now recognized as a real natural wonder – rich in anti oxidants, chlorophyll, and containing up to 90 different minerals, it si the ultimate health tonic.
Here is how you would make it at home, using a compact hand juicer machine.
First, set up your juicer – most will attach to a bench top with either a suction foot or a clamp. Place your glass or container for juice below the spout.
Then select your wheat grass shoots. These should of course be about 3-4 weeks old, or about 3-4 inches tall, and a nice bright green colour. Take a large hand full, and use a sharp knife or a pair of scissors to neatly cut it off at the base of the stalks. You don’t want any roots or soil residue, just the stalks.
If required, give the grass a rinse under clean water – don’t let it go or it will go everywhere! Pat the bunch dry on a paper towel or tea towel.
Now you are ready to juice! Tightly bunch the wheat grass in your fist, and push the bundle into the mouth of the juicer so that it reaches in where the juicing auger is. Now you need to start turning the crank handle.
As you start cranking, you should feel the grass being pulled in by the mechanism. There is meant to be a moderate amount of resistance – just keep turning. After a few turns you will start to see juice dripping out of the spout, and after another 30-60 seconds you will have a nice “shot” of juice ready to drink!
Using a hand juicer is fast, easy and a convenient way to make your own healthy juice at home. It also saves a lot of money over a period of months – buying wheat grass juice at cafes or health food shops is expensive.
Always remember to wash your juicer immediately after use to avoid pulp and juice sticking and causing corrosion or stains.
