Why A Futon Mattress Is My Favorite

You’ll find a lot of articles written about products and services that are simply factual, straightforward or from the company’s PR people.  What about the reviews and personal level of experience?  Well, I know that this brief little article is not going to capture the attention of the futon mattress world, but I wanted to write it anyway.  Yes, I did have a futon bed in college that was good enough at the time.  You know, the ones that became flat as a pancake in no time.  Then, it felt like you were just sleeping on a wood board or whatever your futon was resting on.  That was years ago and I’m in my late thirties now.

Once again, I got to experience what a futon mattress had to offer when I slept over at a friend’s one night. Actually, my wife and I both slept on it.   We felt great in the morning!  It isn’t that our bed is uncomfortable or anything.  In fact, we had a popular, brand-name mattress at the time.  What this futon felt like was a combination of a firm cloud and a supportive chair, if that makes any sense.  This turned me on to them again.  See, this one had inner coiled springs that were then covered and wrapped in wool or something, I can’t remember what they said at the time.  Anyway, it was the topic at breakfast that morning and it didn’t take us long to go out and get one for ourselves.  We really can’t say enough good things about it.  Now, our guests sleep on a slightly used brand-name mattress.

Your Futon Beds In-Fill Material

There are a variety of materials that can be used to form the actual mattress that you or your guess will sleep on.  These materials are commonly cotton, polyester blends, wool, foam and latex.  These are the core of what make the futon mattress keep its firmness and comfort.

In newer models of futon beds, you can also find coiled springs and memory foam.  These are more recent additions to the futon family of materials.  Wool has its advantages as it is naturally a moisture wicking material and is also anti-microbial.  The memory foams are designed to help distribute weight, reduce pressure points and dissipate heat evenly to allow for more comfortable sleep.  Cotton materials were the original and tend to flatten and lose their shape more quickly than the others.  When talking about the inner coiled springs futon mattresses, we are definitely talking about a primary sleeping futon.  You would not be keeping this as an occasional sleeping, sofa-couch type futon.

Futon Mattress From Japan

When in Rome, isn’t that how the saying goes?  Well, if you were in Japan, you would use a Japanese futon and sleep on the floor.  Not actually on the floor, you would be sleeping on tatami mats upon which your futon was placed.  And, your futon bed would consist of a bottom mattress layer and an upper quilted futon cover layer.  When not in use, you would hang it out to air.

The traditional way of sleeping on tatami mats was once reserved for the luxury of the nobility.  Now, it is common practice.  These tatami mats used to be made of rice straw and now are made of compressed wood fibers and even Styrofoam.  Then, the futon mattress can sit on those, rather than directly on the floor surface.  The mattress parts are hung frequently to air out in the sun and are usually cleaned by beating them with a bamboo cane or stick.
