Normally you think of key lanyards as being part of the attire of a maintenance worker or maybe even a PE teacher at the high school, but more and more today you find teenagers have overtaken the use of key lanyards as a part of their every day wardrobe and often they are more for looks than function. The function is an added benefit, but it’s the look that counts. Nearly every young man can be found with a key lanyard stuck in his pocket with keys secure inside and the wide lanyard strap hanging outside along his pant leg.
How this ever got started is anyone’s guess, but a pedestrian, mundane article of building maintenance is now a popular fashion item. Maybe it was when wide strap lanyards were used as advertising pieces and were imprinted with logos and other artwork and then sports teams and then bands took up the cause and made lanyards available as fan merchandise and before you knew it they were everywhere. The second thing a young man gets after achieving his driver’s license is a key lanyard to show off that he too is now mature enough to drive and have his own car.
Where it will end no one knows, but this is sure that if these young men continue to use a key lanyard in their lives as they get older and have offspring of their own, the next generation will find another way to show off their independence. Key lanyards will be in the domain of old fogeys and some other commonly used item will be the new standard in status and fashion. Take a look of the lanyards hanging from pockets today and you will probably be able to tell a lot about the you ng man just from the way he takes care of his keys.
