Menopause is when a woman’s body stops producing eggs, estrogen and progesterone production slows down and periods stop. This usually happens naturally between the ages 45-55 but can happen earlier or latter and still be perfectly natural. There are some hormone level tests that your doctor can perform to definitively gauge whether you are in menopause or not. Typically, menopause isn’t something that happens suddenly, but rather it’s a slow subtle change that occurs over a period of several years. Some typical signs of menopause are period bleeding stops or becomes erratic, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, mood swings, anxiety, night sweats, and loss of sex drive. Not all women experience menopause symptom but most menopausal women will experience at least a few symptoms with hot flashes being one of the most common symptoms. Benefits of Exercise during Menopause
After menopause, women begin to lose bone density at a rate of 4% -6% over the first 5 years. To counteract this bone loss, one of the best things you can do is weight bearing exercise – weight bearing just means putting weight on the bones, so almost all exercises are weight bearing such as walking, running, and aerobics, two popular exercises that wouldn’t qualify as weight bearing are swimming and biking. To get the most benefits from an exercise routine, commit to 30 minutes of exercise done 5 days a week. It will help you stay on track if you can find a like minded friend with similar fitness goals because people who have a workout partner are much more likely to stay with an exercise plan.
In addition to helping strengthen bones and reduce bone loss, exercise helps reduce stress, promote better overall health, and ensure an active life well into your future.
