Work Glove Safety for the Home

The most common workplace injury is to the hands, this has lead to many campaigns for work gloves. Many workers complain about not being able properly do their jobs with gloves or that they are simply annoying. Having worked in an industrial environment for many years I can sympathize but I have also seen first hand how debilitating a serious hand injury can be. OSHA requires that companies in certain industries provide their employees with gloves.

Prior to 2000, no safety regulation covered work gloves. We now have requirements which must be met and we also have a vast selection of good quality gloves that can save you much pain and suffering. As a result of this there have been far few hand injuries in recent decades than in previous decades.

One of the main problems is that often this safety culture stays at the workplace and does not make it home where it can be implemented as well. Home hand injuries are still about as high as they have been in the past. Any drop in injuries is more attributed to safer tools.

A couple of places you can use work gloves around the home that are often over looked are as follows:

The kitchen – Cutting is dangerous, cut resistant glove are available and can save dinner. Not to mention gloves for doing dishes or preparing food.

The garage – Many people preform heavy work in the garage without any type of personal protective equipment. Sanders, saws, car work, and other power tools can all be serious harmful to your hands if you are not taking prober precautions.

The yard – Yard work presents all sorts of hazards to hands that can be protected against with gloves. Raking can cause blisters, mowing can cause vibration trauma, and picking up sticks can cause puncture wounds. The yard can be a dangerous place for hands.

Any other application that requires you to use your hands regularly is a candidate for some type of hand protection. Use work gloves to keep your hands safe and injury free, you will be glad.
