An underground dog fence or more commonly known as an invisible dog fence offers a fence free boundary for your home and yard. For those of you who do not have a traditional fenced in yard, this is one of the best options to keep your pet inside the set boundaries without the expense of putting in a regular wooden fence.
The types of an invisible dog fences on the market are really basically two kinds. These are the wireless dog fence and the underground or electric dog fence. The biggest difference is the set up. For the underground dog fence type of fencing, it functions in a pretty simple way. A wire is buried around the boundary that you want to set for your yard. This wire communicates a radio signal to a small collar that your pet wears. Your dog should wear the special collar whenever it is outside in your yard. One main point to emphasize is that your pet must be trained properly for an invisible dog fence to work in a safe and effective way.
When your dog gets close to the boundary set by the buried wires, the collar will emit a warning beep letting your pet know it is getting too close to the boundary. Your dog will not go past this point if your pet has been properly trained to use the system. But, if the dog goes past the boundary, the collar will give a mild electrical shock of correction to tell your pet that it is too far from perimeter. The correction is not harmful to your pet and should not be viewed as inhumane. It is similar to static electricity shocks and then touching your brother to shock him.
Underground dog fences are a great way to humanely contain your family dog. You will have to put a little effort into installation, but maintenance is not necessary except to change batteries in the collar and transmitter.
