  • The Sad Tale of A Mountain Biker with no Insurance

Posted on August 18th, 2010 GuestPoster No comments

Dave decided that he wanted to have the holiday of a lifetime. He planned it all down to the last point. His mountain bike was all sorted, and he had all the spares that he needed.

So with plane tickets in hand, and his wheels safely packed as hand luggage, and everything stowed and stored he travelled to his dream destination: Saudi Arabia to cycle across the desert.

He landed, and everything was entact.  It was perfect.

He then started the cycling trip in earnest.  And because of his great plan many people were following him on his website, Twitter, facebook…You name it, Dave had it all planned.

He was the hero of the moment.

Actually,he was the hero of the year.

5 days into his journey, disaster struck.  He was decending down a steep incline when somehow his back axel broke.  It really shouldn’t have happened.  Whether it was the dry heat, or just something he forgot will remain a mystery.  Whatever, it snapped in two, and of course, Dave didn’t have a spare.  Well, a back axel isn’t something you carry!

Thankfully, he had a satellit phone on him and within hours he was picked up, brought back to his hotel, and shipped home.

Only now dave was in serious debt.  Why?  because he hadn’t taken out any insurance!

Dave was a serious mountain biker, and to not have any insurance was complete madness.  Even if he had covered himself for just a year, to the hilt, it would only have cost him £250, and that would have covered his travel, his bike, and if he had fallen off even his dental work!

Of course there would have been an excess, but given the amount that he had to pay to get himself home, it was just a drop in the ocean.

If you are travelling anywhere, or do anything at all risky on your mountain bike, then get mountain bike insurance.  Many of them will cover damage as well as you, even your income if you are incapacitated.
