In the process, many goods are diverted away from landfills and re-used. They may be used as originally intended or re-purposed for another use.
Freecycling is usually limited to local or regional groups, where people can easily pick up wanted items or take them to those in need. However, there are national and international groups as well. Usually items offer internationally are smaller and easy to ship. The concept is becoming increasingly popular in Europe and in Canada, as well as in the U.S.
Many cities have yahoo groups where members joint and list items they may need or items they want to get rid of. This is a much better option than throwing unwanted household items in the trash. Items listed can range from overstock of wrapped candy, to larger pieces of furniture. Mothers Like freecycling as they can often find infant items and clothing for little ones without having to buy all new items.
When people participate in such an activity they are helping the environment. At the same time they are helping someone in need who may not be able to afford a larger piece of furniture, new baby crib, or other necessities. Buying fewer items from retail establishments is good for the household budget and is also good for landfills.
