Nobody wants anything to go wrong during their wedding ceremony. It seems like more often than not though something does. After all, it’s all so formal and things are planned to go just so so. It’s easy in such a situation for something to happen that’s not just right. Fortunately, most of the time it is a minor thing, and can actually add a touch of humor to the occasion and actually loosen everybody up.
One of those situations during a wedding ceremony that something can go a bit wrong is during the lighting of the unity candle. Unity candles for weddings are very nice and many couples still choose to utilize this well worn tradition. But there is fire involved and that’s on occasion for a mishap.
People’s hair have caught on fire, as well as nearby curtains or church wedding decorations. We’ve seen candles that are lit too early and before the ceremony is over they have nearly if not completely burned out – along with candle drippings all over the carpet.
Other times the problem is getting the pillar candle lit. At one wedding, the person in charge placed the candle wrong side up. For some reason, the couple couldn’t light the bottom of the candle – oh, yes, there is no wick on the bottom! At one wedding we attended for a professional football player, the candle was placed right side up, but the wick was too short to light. The quick thinking groom simply took his finger and dug out some wax around the wick so enough was sticking up that they could light it. Again, it only humor as everyone could see what had happened.
Don’t let any of this talk out of using the unity candle ceremony in your wedding. You just can’t worry about these little mishaps. They will happen regardless of what you do. You just have to take them in stride and not worry that they will ruin your wedding. It is hardly ever that bad.
